The Batapola Hospital is the closest Hospital serving the worst tsunami affected area. The Hospital General ward has only room for 20 beds but houses twice that number by overcrowding. On the day of the tsunami 1375 dead bodies were brought in and later over 6000 (six thousand) patients were treated for injuries. The building and roof are over 100 years old and half of the section had been renovated recently. However, a few months ago the roof had collapsed narrowly escaping another disaster due to thoughtful preventive action taken by the GMO Dr. J M Jayatilleka. The proposal is to undertake funding and repairing of the collapsed roof of the main General ward and associated structure of this 4000 sqft part of the building. --- see detail project report ----
