It is well known from news paper articles that Matale area is suffering from water problems. Even the municipal water supply through taps is restricted to about 4 hours. This project focuses on a area with 47 houses in the windward side (stage-1 of the project) and 127 houses (stage 2 of the project ) in the leeward side of the mountain area where you finds poorest of the poor. The area is occupied by both the Sinhala and Muslim community and on the hill top small temple is coming up. Presently they collect rain water in small plastic cans and their houses are more or less filled with large number of water cans and a down pipe a gutter connected to the roof..
The stage 1 of the Water Management Project started in October 2004 to provide water for 47 families in one side of the mountain of the most poorest area and completed on 21.12.2004. Water now comes to concrete tank from a tube well half-way through the mountain. Stage 2 started February 2005 to provide water from a tank on top of the mountain to the both sides.
