GEMOLOGY
PROJECT MATCHING GRANT NO 69148 |

The
objective of the project is to provide, the underprivileged
children in Sri Lanka, an in depth training in Gemology,
Gem Cutting and Gem polishing, along with language skills
and knowledge in Information Technology. It is intended
that on completion of this training the participants will
be in a position to gain employment in the field of Gem
Processing and Gem Trade. |

The
training center is located in beruwela known as “GEM T.E.D
Training Center” and the school is run by the French charity
“Batisseurs d’espoir”, twinned with a French Gemology
high school. The project was mooted, established and operated
by Rtn. Mark Dole a member of the Rotary Club of Dijion
Toison d’Or of France. |

It
is a Matching Grant project between the local partner,
Rotary Club of Colombo Central and the foreign partner
is RC of Dijion Toison d’Or of France. The Equipments,
accessories and furniture were purchased with the funds
from the Matching Grant at a total cost of US$ 63,673.91
equivalent to Rs 7,260,625.00. |

Presently
the equipments are all installed and the school has started
with a batch of 8 girls aged between 18 to 22. The girls
are selected from all parts of Sri Lanka and they are
on in-house training scheme where every week, the training
commences on Monday morning and ends on Friday evening.
The participants come from their home-town on Monday and
leave on Saturday morning and during these five days they
are provided with free food and accommodation at the training
center. The duration of the course is two years when they
are trained on Gemology, Gem cutting, Gem polishing, English,
French and Computer usage. The teachers and instructors
are from Sri Lanka and France and the overall management
of the scheme is by Miss Aurelie Rumas of France and is
housed at the Training Center. |
