REMEBERING OUR CHARTER PRESIDENT

The Rotary Club of Colombo Central was chartered in September 1979 with K.Sivagananathan as its President.

A well respected Banker, K.Sivagananathan served as a senior Deputy General Manager of the Bank of Ceylon. Following his retirement, he took over as the CEO of Janashakthi Insurance Company PLC, and later worked as a Consultant to the Central Bank of Sri Lanka until his untimely death in 2002.

Charter President Siva was a mentor, guide and a father figure for Rotary Colombo Central and any conflict among members is solved in an amicable manner by him. Even with his busy schedule he made sure that he attends every weekly meeting and projects conducted by the Club. He was a stickler for time and insisted on the meeting started in time and conducted according to the agenda. Whenever we had a problem in getting a Guest Speaker he is the one who will fix a good speaker with very short notice and there were times when the arranged speaker could not come, he will speak on an interesting topic to save the day.

In the earlier time before bifurcation of the district in 1991 when our district consisted of Sri Lanka and parts of Tamil Nadu, Siva had lead the delegation to Conferences held in South India and senior members still narrate several fond memories. Our charter member PP Joe Jeyamanne, a family friend of Siva, was involved in several projects with Siva and tells highly about his commitment to Rotary and his skills in raising fund for worthy causes.

Siva also held several high positions in the Rotary District including Assistant Governor, Chairman District Assembly, and Chairman District Conference. Under his Chairmanship up to then, we had the highest no of Registration in District Conferences and was attended by large gathering of Rotarians from India. The District assembly was unique where the Registration amount was only a mere Rs 10/- the lowest ever.

The K. Sivagananathan Memorial Trust was established in honour of one of his last wishes: To provide an opportunity to assist financially disadvantaged students across Sri Lanka who show promise in the fields of banking and finance.

Charismatic Sivagananathan, always had a charming smile and he had a majestic personality. Rotary Colombo Central, remember him with respect and hope to establish an on-going project in his memory, involving Interactors.
