Sukitha Home for Mentally Retarded Children and Sukitha Special School for mentally Retarded Children is situated at Galpatha Kalutara District accommodates about 85 children Some without parents or others with one parent. They are from the lowest society and this charitable organization does a very good job of taking care of these mentally retarded children, teaching and training them to take care of themselves and where ever possible at the end of schooling by giving a training in the vocational aspect at there Horana Vocational Training Centre, specially for young girls. A major handicap this centre has is when the young children gets older they have no place to go and they grow older (the non capable ones specially) at the home and this blocks out room for new members who are young and who needs the fundamental training at the early age of life. The younger children grow up amongst the middle aged and the older people doesn’t get the full attention they needed. Due to lack of residential facility work force Infra structure etc the older permanent inmates have to be kept at the same centre. If a home separately for the elderly once can be provided then they will find better attention and comforts at their old age while younger children get their share better and will allow more room for the new younger ones to get in. This is a need some volunteer group has to pay attention.
Rotary Club of Colombo Central with the aid of OTA New York USA presented two water pumps to to draw water from the very deep wells. into a pipe system. Now the mentally handicapped children need not pull water from the well. They are free to use pipe water for their daily needs. Also they use this water to water the plants and flower beds. The cost of the project is LKR 32,500/- (US$325) Rotary Club of Colombo Central helped both the school and the home by donating water pumps to draw water from the very deep wells. This was a felt need for a while and they are all thankful to the Rotary Club of Colombo Central for this generous gesture. For maintenance of the home and the school, the department of Social Services gives a very nominal support and the major part of other assistance comes form the donors and well-wishers. Any form of assistance cash clothing food- medicine educational materials toys anything will be warmly welcome by them. This is for you o take time off to think about the lesser-privileged children of our country, ho are fortunate to get in to this institute but still who has many unmet needs. Think a small donation will go a long way to make a “Special Child” happy. Project Conducted by.Niranjala Dharmadasa Assistant Secretary |
